Allergies?Important Facts About
Indoor Air Quality
and Your Family's Health

The quality of the air we breathe indoors has become an increasingly important environmental concern. Recognized authorities in the field of health and air quality have determined that:

  • Most people spend 60% to 90% of their time indoors -- American Lung Association
  • 50% of all illnesses are either caused by, or aggravated by, polluted indoor air -- American College of Allergists
  • The levels of some hazardous pollutants in indoor air has been found to be up to 70 times greater than found in outdoor air --USEPA
  • Studies have shown that 2 out of 3 indoor air quality problems involve the HVAC system
  • More than 50 million Americans suffer from allergies
  • 10-12 million Americans suffer from asthma -- American College of Allergists
  • 1 out of 6 people who suffer from allergies do so because the direct relationship to fungi and bacteria in air duct systems -- Total Health and Better Health Magazines
  • Children and the elderly are especially affected by polluted indoor air -- Department of Consumer Affairs
  • Most commercially available fiberglass furnace filters are less than 7% efficient -- ASHRAE

spacerDirty Air Duct Systems -- A Major Source Of Indoor Air Pollution

furnaceDust, dirt, pollen, animal dander and other air borne contaminants are pulled into the duct system every time your furnace or air conditioner is turned on. These contaminants build up inside the ductwork over time and turn the duct system into an ideal breeding ground for mold spores, bacteria, fungus, mildew and other microbes. Individuals who suffer from allergies, asthma, or other respiratory ailments -- as well as children and elderly -- are especially vulnerable to the effects of indoor air pollutants.

The removal of these contaminants from the entire HVAC system is recognized by industry experts as the most effective way to eliminate pollutants. In addition to the obvious health benefits, duct cleaning can help you maintain a cleaner home. It also helps restore your HVAC systems capacity and lessens running time, resulting in lower heating and cooling bills.

spacerDust is Dangerous

Dust is everywhere. It accumulates on the walls and ceilings, on your bedding, furnishings, window treatments, in the heating and cooling system, but typically most of all it collects on horizontal surfaces such as floors, and carpets. Dust causes and aggravates many illnesses as outlined below:

  • Asthmatics make one million hospital visits per year - 1/2 million hospital visits are attributed to dust mites, legionella, etc.
  • "The average person's respiratory system has to eliminate, every day, over two heaping tablespoons of particulate matter..." -- Respiratory Care, March/April, 1973
  • "The average six room house or dwelling collects 40 pounds of dust each year." -- Discover Magazine
  • "Many viruses and bacteria use dust particles as rafts to ride the air." -- Science Illustrated

spacerIndoor Air Quality Testing and Sampling

With the indoor air quality and mold being such an issue in today's world, Metro Restoration can perform a visual survey for air quality at an economical rate. We have several Professional Residential Mold Inspectors on staff as well as a Certified Mold Remediator, and a I.A.Q.A. Certified Indoor Environmentalist.

Air Sampling

Indoor Air Quality TestingMetro Restoration will survey the home or building and take test samples to forward to a laboratory to determine the fungal ecology and / or contamination. In sampling, it is customary to collect an outside bio aerosol when dealing with suspected indoor fungal contamination. This is used as a base line for the indoor comparison. The number of indoor samples taken depends on the problem areas and non-problem areas of the property as well as potential health problems occupants may be experiencing. With the use of sampling, we will have a better understanding if the fungal ecology of the property is amplified in comparison to the outdoors. There are several methods of sampling that will be performed during the survey to determine the condition and / or fungal ecology of the property.

condensation problems?Moisture

We also may check wall cavities and structure components with moisture meters to determine if there are elevated levels of hidden moisture. Relative humidity readings are taken as well to ensure that there is no hidden water intrusion. The HVAC system or air handler may also need to be surveyed for contamination as it circulates the air through the home or building.

spacerDryer Vent Cleaning to Prevent Fires

Fire PreventionThe collection of lint in a dryer's exhaust duct can be a potential fire hazard. The Consumer Products Safety Commission estimate that over 15,000 clothes dryer related fires occur in the U.S. each year.

Metro Restoration will remove debris and lint buildup in dryer vents allowing the dryer to operate safely and be more energy efficient and last longer.
